What is Mentorship?
Since 2003, Taiwan Chambre of Commerce in BC (TCCBC) has worked together with its junior division, Taiwan Young Professionals and Entrepreneurs in BC (TYPEABC) to create a platform for sharing experience across different age groups in various industries including finance, marketing, real estate, accounting, and entrepreneurship, in the hope to help young Taiwanese generation overcome obstacles as they encounter them throughout their career. The Mentorship Program is an annual collaboration between TCCBC and TYPEABC which typically spans over 4-5 months period and its mandate is to help young TYPEABC members improve personal qualities and integrate into the mainstream market. Also, the program help them set personal goals, absorb experience, gain knowledge, develop social network, find hidden talent, and obtain insights from professionals who are already established in various industries.
To facilitate a better learning experience, every year the Mentorship Program uses different structures and themes. By using one-to-one matching between mentors and mentees, as well as group workshops and seminars, the mentees have a chance to engage in discussions and reflections with their peers and mentors. Continuing to build on top of previous years of experience in holding the Mentorship Program, countless hours are put in to make it more valuable to the mentees by adhering to higher standard and careful execution. From participating in the Mentorship Program, mentees learn from different established professionals and are inspired in life philosophy, relationships, and balanced life style. Some mentees found the need for re-education after the program and some found a path to their future, yet even more have acquired self-respect, confidence, and the courage to face life’s lessons ahead. In retrospect, the mentors who have participated in the program have come to better understanding of this new generation’s thought patterns which narrowed generation gap, and identified outstanding new talents for solidifying Taiwanese position in North American markets.
The success of the Mentorship Program over the past 7 years is obvious to all. It increased the mentees’ capability to enter work force to pursue their life goals. All of these will not have happened without each mentor’s fervent participation, mentees’ hard work, and the support of many other participants whom have made the program possible.
